Stress and hypertension are linked together. It has always been pretty much agreed upon in the medical community that being nervous raises blood pressure readings. So, it figures that being in an anxious state a good deal of the time could cause hypertension.

I am not a doctor and I didn't sleep in any motel last night. However, the link between hypertension and anxiety was explained to me by a person who does work in the medical field and sleeps at motels all the time. So, you can rest assured this man knows what he is talking about. Here's how he explains it:

When a person has an anxiety attack or maybe even a panic attack, adrenaline flows wildly in the bloodstream. The original effect of heavy adrenaline flowing through our bodies was it made us prepared to survive the perils of the wild; the original cause of our fear, or at least our ancestor's fears. Other things happen when we are in a state of extreme adrenaline. Having elevated blood pressure is one of these things. In short, this adrenaline supercharges us so we can fight off wild animals and without elevated blood pressure we could not become fully charged up. Actually, this type of elevated blood pressure is not so harmful an event because we are constructed to withstand spells of this nature.

So having this temporary blood pressure elevation does not cause hypertension. If we have a panic attack or two, this is not significant as far as blood pressure is concerned. This is not to say we shouldn't have our blood pressure taken often because there are many causes of hypertension.

Living in stress, even mild stress if it is constant, will tend to keep our blood pressure readings at an increased level. So, it is the low level consistent stress that will work us to the point of where hypertension could possibly be introduced. The smaller bursts of anxiety or fear are something we have been built for and usually they are medically insignificant.

Any kind of nervousness, short and powerful or low level and constant make for a very unpleasant situation. Practicing relaxation on a daily basis can help you beat either type of anxiety. What is a technique for reaching a state of relaxation? Here is a very basic relaxation technique anybody can use:

Recline in a chair or lie down in a bed and close your eyes.

Breathe in through the nose to the count of four.

Hold the breath for the count of five.

Exhale through the mouth for the count of six.

Do these last three steps comfortably. Don't be too concerned about hitting the count exactly.

Repeat the breaths four times or five times.

Imagine your whole body loosening up; think of it as actually becoming limp. (about 5-10 minutes)

Don't try to do anything but imagine your body as very relaxed and comfortable.

Visualize things that make you feel peaceful. Make them up if you have to. (another 15-20 minutes)

When your day becomes stressful or you feel anxiety coming on, recall your peaceful relaxation session. Practicing this technique or a similar one can be a very helpful part to a program geared to help you control hypertension or overcome anxiety.

Yes, making these changes was really hard at first, but now that I am over the hump, it isn't very hard at all.

So, if you've been told, like all we hypertension sufferers have been told, you have to limit your salt intake, drink only moderately, lose weight and exercise; I want you to know you can absolutely, positively do it. The key is you have to want to make a change in your life or you're not going to. However, take heart because today's change is tomorrow's habit. Following a hypertension control regiment might look like a most daunting task at first, but once you get the hang of it, which will take about three weeks, very little effort will be required.

Fish oil for blood pressure is often recommended by health care providers, but there is still a lot of confusion as to why this act is being practiced. Some people claim that despite ingesting high volumes of concentrated fish oil, blood pressure remains relatively the same - or worse, there is even an increase in hypertensive levels. So can fish oil really do anything to improve blood pressure?

Yes. Fish oil for blood pressure can help improve blood circulation, but it cannot cure preexisting conditions like coronary artery disease and atherosclerosis. Here is how fish oil for blood pressure works.

First, you need to understand the basics of LDL and HDL. LDL or low density lipoprotein and HDL or high density lipoprotein are the main molecule carriers in the blood stream. These are the ones responsible for bringing nutrients, oxygen and any other compounds derived from food and drinks in the blood.

As blood circulates throughout the body, these aforementioned nutrients, oxygen and compounds are distributed to different body parts as well. Unfortunately, especially with the case of LDL, some of the compounds they carry are not really favorable to good health. Cholesterol and other fats when combined with LDL becomes "bad cholesterol", simply because these are not dissolved in the blood and are transported everywhere in the body.

The smaller arteries, particularly around the heart area usually cannot accommodate these larger compounds. The bad cholesterol, along with other fatty deposits, is eventually trapped within the small walls becoming arterial plaques (hardened deposits) that constrict or even completely block off blood flow to that section.

High blood pressure or hypertension is due to these blockages. The more arteries that are blocked, and the tighter the arterial plaques are within the arterial walls, higher pressure is needed to pump blood back in and out of the heart.

On the other hand, when a person is given fish oil for blood pressure, this causes his or her HDL or high density lipoprotein to go on overdrive. HDL, when combined with cholesterol becomes "good cholesterol" because the fatty deposits are redirected almost immediately to the liver and no where else. The liver then processes these so that the fatty deposits can be expelled from the body, and thereby sparing the arteries of the heart from further blockages.

This helps improve or level blood pressure. However, as stated earlier, fish oil supplements, no matter how concentrated they are or how high the dosages are taken, cannot clear the already blocked arteries from the cholesterol plaques. At the same time, these supplements cannot remove all bad cholesterol from the body, since LDL is a natural occurring process in the circulatory system.

In order to gain the best benefits from regularly taking fish oil for blood pressure, the person must still limit - or better yet, eliminate fatty foods from his or her diet. Regular exercise as well as a healthier lifestyle is also recommended so that blood circulation improves and that blood pressure levels off to more comfortable settings. It would also be best to have a health care provider check the condition of the heart and its surrounding arteries in case more medication or treatment is needed.
