Hypertension, most commonly referred to as "high blood pressure", HTN or HPN, is a medical condition in which the blood pressure is chronically elevated. It was previously referred to as arterial hypertension, but in current usage, the word "hypertension" without a qualifier normally refers to arterial hypertension.

Hypertension Prognosis - When Controlled, High Blood Pressure is Not All That Bad

The prognosis for those of us who have been diagnosed with hypertension is a good normal, probably long life, if we follow some very basic rules.

At the first symptom of hypertension, we must get it checked out.
If it is found we have hypertension, our doctor must come up with a plan to control it.
Whatever this plan is, we must follow it.
If the plan includes medication, we have to take it exactly as described.
Keep regular appointments with the doctor and let him/her know of any possible side effects of the medication.

Each medical professional's plan may vary somewhat and each patient will tend to warrant a somewhat different plan. Still, there are some constants every high blood pressure patient can expect. For instance:

Don't be a salt-a-holic.
Watch the alcohol intake. We're only human, but if you want to drive your blood pressure through the roof, have a few drinks everyday or at least most days. As with just about anything else, moderation is the key.
Except when comes to smoking. No matter what it takes; patches, pills, hypnosis or anything else. Moderation is not good enough with smoking. It's pretty much been established nobody should smoke, but if you have high blood pressure it is 10 times more important you stay away from smoking.
When I say smoking, I really mean smoking anything else, too. Marijuana can have a very bad effect on the nerves. It is one of the root causes of anxiety disorder in many who have used it. There is a connection between nervousness and hypertension. So, just like with tobacco, you may need help in doing so, but quitting pot helps control hypertension.
Make sure to check with the doctor first, but for most people an exercise program is highly recommended.
Weight control? I know it's a long hard battle, but every pound you can lose makes controlling and maybe even lowering your blood pressure a little easier.

I've had controlled hypertension for years. Every time I have had it checked in recent years I've gotten a very good reading. It's work, but it is very much worth the effort. When a person has uncontrolled hypertension for a certain period of time, the arteries become hardened and this is very dangerous to the cardio-vascular system. There are other complications to having uncontrolled hypertension but this is the one I worry about most.

So, I've made up my mind, I will see my doctor regularly, follow his orders and every day I keep in mind I am living my life in a way conducive to controlling my blood pressure. Actually, it's not that bad a deal!

This is, of course, along with following his doctor's orders. He recommends hypertension sufferers learn the same techniques he uses by visiting Symptom of Hypertension. Also, learn more about the connection between hypertension and anxiety and how to control it at Dealing With Anxiety.
