The ancient sages realized that a person couldn't live for very long without breathing and there was a direct connection between breathing and living. Smart people those sages. Pranayama is definitely an art as well as a science. Many people breathe incorrectly by forcing air into the upper lobes of their lungs leaving the bottom half of their lungs inactive. Watch a person breathe, while they are unaware of your watching them, and you will probably see their chest move rather than their stomach. This is indicative of wrongful breathing. The diaphragm, the sheet of muscle between the thorax and the abdomen, is the organ of breath. When it moves downward air flows into the lungs and when it relaxes back to its original dome-shaped position air flows out of the lungs. This is normal, natural and unconscious breathing. But with the advent of chairs for sitting and tight belts for holding up pants, breathing has become reversed and lungs have become underutilized.

Wave Breathing

Wave breathing is a type of pranayama that I have learned to use over the years that is very effective in lowering my blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing rate. It is also very relaxing and soothing to my mind. Wave breathing is best done while standing, sitting or lying down. It can also be done while walking and doing mild yoga, but it is very difficult to do while vigorously exercising.

To do wave breathing, breathe in through the nose focusing on the diaphragm, pulling air into the bottom of the lungs. I like to imagine the lungs as one large flat bag (much like a water bottle) extending all the way from the pelvis to the neck. Inflate the lungs slowly from the bottom, bringing air toward the top and imagine the air moving like an ocean wave. Don't inflate the lungs fully but only partially, maybe about one-third full and then relax and let the lungs slowly deflate from the bottom to the top again. Breathing is done slowly and deliberately with emphasis on wave motion from bottom to top both on inhalation and exhalation. One hundred percent of the lungs' volume is utilized this way with very little effort. With practice you will begin to notice your breathing rate become slower. You may be taking only two or three breaths per minute and feeling no discomfort at all. Also, the amount of air that you are taking in with each breath will get less and less, almost to the point of having the feeling of not breathing. The first time this happened to me I thought I wasn't breathing at all. This is a very healthy practice because it calms everything while bathing every cell in the body with rich, fresh oxygen.

I didn't read about wave breathing and no one taught me how do it. I discovered the method accidently one day while in the resting pose after doing some yoga. Since then, I have practiced wave breathing in different positions and in various situations. It always brings me into a state of calmness and peace of mind. Sometimes I like to practice wave breathing while listening to music. This morning I put on a CD consisting of a mixture of Benedictine Monk songs. I traveled though the poses very slowly and held the poses longer than usual while wave breathing. It was another unusual but marvelous experience. Focusing on my breath moving up and down my lungs like an ocean wave, I could literally feel the music being absorbed into my body The experience brought a complete sense of oneness with the breath, the body, and the music. I believe wave breathing could be another way to calm the mind for the purpose of reaching the state of consciousness known as pure awareness.

DON'T sleep less. Sleep the right amount of hours. The right amount of hours to sleep is 8 hours. Don't oversleep as well. Setup an alarm clock. In clinical practice, if the case is an excessive liver-yang syndrome, the first group of acupoints is chosen. Hormones are the chemical messengers of the body since they release certain cells that affect tissues, muscles, and organ cells. Hormones influence blood pressure, like in the case of our kidneys where the hormonal imbalance of insulin leads to a diabetic disorder that progresses with high blood pressure complications.

Another cause of high blood pressure is the activation of the sympathetic nervous system which will produce renin when under the influence of stress. As mentioned earlier, when renin is discharged, angiotensin follows thereby making the blood pressure to rise. Kidneys affect high blood pressure due to certain imbalances while in the process of cleansing our body of about 50 gallons of fluid daily. Any imbalance will cause the filtering units of the kidneys called nephrons, to exert more effort than what is normally required.

The nephrons will also reabsorb the filtered sodium and water and return them to the blood. If there is an excessive amount of sodium and volume of liquid that the kidneys failed to expel and flush out, it follows that there will also be an excessive amount of sodium and water to be re-absorbed by the nephrons back to our blood.

Excessive amount of sodium in the bloodstream will now cause an imbalance with the other minerals contained in blood cells. This then will trigger the onset of high blood pressure as there is now a disproportion between sodium and other minerals particularly potassium.

Under normal processes, the kidneys regulate the flow of fluid volume of the blood as well as limiting the sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium contents in the body system. These minerals affect the relaxation of arteriole muscles or small blood vessels branching from an artery.

The kidneys will remove the water, remaining wastes and excessive materials from the blood to be distributed again already purified against wastes, back into the bloodstream. The waste products and liquid that contain these minerals are excreted in the kidney by producing urine.

The body has two kidneys about the size of an adult fist. The body reabsorbs around 99 percent of sodium thereby an active adult needs only a daily intake of 300 milligrams of sodium, or even less according to some experts. Hence, salt is no longer needed in the preparation of food since most food groups contain sodium.

How Imbalances Affect the Kidney In Ways that Lead to High Blood Pressure

Aside from sodium, hormonal systems can influence the function of the kidneys resulting to sodium reabsorption. Hormonal imbalance occurs, in the case of overweight persons who tend to produce excessive insulin. By a natural reaction, excessive insulin will cause sodium reabsorption in the cells which will cause a chain reaction of disporportion leading to the elevation of blood pressure.

Another example is when the adrenal glands produce aldosterone which triggers the kidneys to preserve sodium and chloride and expel potassium. Aldosterone enables the retention of sodium by the kidneys and sweat glands. Although produced by the adrenal glands, the kidneys regulate the hormone angiotensin and the enzyme renin.

Any failure of the kidney to regulate the production of the hormone angiotensin will cause a constriction of the arterioles. Constricted or closed arterioles will cause blood pressure to rise since they are at the receiving end of the blood circulation processes. The pressure that prods blood to surge forward will meet closed or constricted arterioles which causes a build-up leading to high blood pressure.

The kidneys release renin when you are under stress or when somebody attacks you. People with Type A personality produce excess renin which will bring high blood pressure. Other related excess renin can be pinpointed to lack of magnesium.

If aldosterone is caused by an illness, medical treatment is necessary.
